This year for the 250th celebration the Granville Union Cemetery Board in partner with both the Son of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the American Revolution participated in portraying the various revolutionary war veterans buried at the Old Colony burying grounds in Granville Ohio. Our own Camp Charlotte members had a number of cast involved in the affair. The temperature for the day stayed a warm 90+ degrees so ice water was very important to be around to try and keep cool.
April 23 the members of Camp Charlotte SAR and the Pickaway Plains DAR were invited to a 250th Celebration event held at the Westfall elementary school. The event was well attended by many of the students, parents and faculty of the school. there were many questions on the items the members of the SAR brought in and educated those on what is was to live during the period of the revolutionary war. There were listed approx. 400 RSVP and the number of kids that came in to see and learn was truly special.
April 15th The State 250th commission organized help an American Revolution encampment event in front of the state house lawn. Many reenactors were present to show the public a little of what it was like during the late 1700. On hand were the 8th Pennsylvanian regiment were there to show life as a soldier in the revolutionary war. Camp Charlotte was there show many of the items the militia would have had during that time. The weather while quite sunny was very very windy causing many items all over the field to be simply carried off into the wind.
On March 11th in our on-going dedication to the SAR Youth education learning, members of the OHSSAR chapters The Hocking Valley and Camp Charlotte were invited to give a little presentation on Colonial living at the Westerville Hanby Elementary school. Members Kevin T. Donahue Camp Charlotte, Tom Hankins Hocking Valley, Bob Hill Hocking Valley and Max Demp Camp Charlotte provide a number of items of interest and knowledge from the period of the American Revolution all the kids were from various 4th grade classes and were pleasantly entertained with what we brought to share.
This past Tuesday November 11th Veterans day Westfall High school held a program to honor all our military service members past and present. The chapters of the Pickaway Plains DAR and Camp Charlotte SAR were both invited to participate in the event. Christine Lallier set the tone by reading a daughters letter to the attendees that was to her veteran father the day she visited the Vietnam memorial to remember his and other that sacrificed their lives so we could have the freedom we so cherish.
Friday, November 7th Camp Charlotte of the SAR and the ladies of the Pickaway Plains DAR chapter were invited to give a short Veterans Day presentation at Walnut Elementary, it’s history and the importance of it today. Kevin T. Donahue from Camp Charlotte along with Christine Lallier and Valerie Crist from the Pickaway Plains chapter were dressed in period attire and shared a brief overview of Veterans Day to K – 5th grade students, parents and guest veterans as part of the school’s program.
This year we returned to Licking Heights Elementary for their Veterans day program on the 8th of November and in addition were invited to participate in a Veterans Day program at Mars Hill Academy on November 11th. Both were very enjoyable with the Mars Hill Academy allowing the SAR members to demonstrate how period arms were used during the American Revolution with the firing of a musket salute out in their sports complex and taking a Q&A moment afterwards.
Pataskala, Ohio at Licking Heights South Elementary School, and their Veterans Day Program had two services one at 9:00 am had around 600 3rd & 4th graders and another at 2:30 with about 200 2nd graders. In between the two programs we visited a couple of 4th grade classes and had a good Q&A session on the American Revolution.
The principal and teachers there are great, taking seriously not only general academics, but patriotism, history and civics. Their music department is top notch, the kids sang beautifully the National Anthem and a song called “I Love America.”
